Greetings from your former appetizer host, everyone!
It has been an exciting but busy few months for my husband, Corey, and me. We moved from Nova Scotia to Winnipeg, Manitoba. We are both working new jobs and, in addition to establishing the lay of the land, we have been enjoying food adventures since we left Nova Scotia.
Winnipeg is known as being a great place to dine out, get farm fresh ingredients and has been a great source of inspiration for new recipes. The weather has been hot and sunny, but every once in a while I’ve missed the cool breeze from the ocean and the fresh seafood we used to have immediate access to.
I recently had an opportunity to get some lobster freshly delivered from Nova Scotia, which inspired a simple fall recipe that combines the lightness of fresh seafood with the comfort food feeling of a warm, gooey, grilled-cheese sandwich:
We have been planning a kitchen renovation in our new house, so as hard as it is for anyone who knows me to believe, the kitchen is the one room we have not yet fully unpacked from our moving boxes. We do have a few items in use, and it just so happens that this recipe doesn’t require much more than a bowl, a couple of spoons and a way to toast the bread. I used a barbeque, but you could just as easily use your oven, a small toaster oven, or a frying pan to make this crispy, cheesy treat.

Fresh seafood from down home. I have been living in Alberta and whenever I fly home I find a restaurant to get a captains platter. Nothing better than fresh seafood. -

Since I'm on my fast, I've been longing for baked goods.... or stuffing and mushroom gravy (it's a seasonal thang). -
The food I'm longing for is gingerbread cookies. It seems to be the perfect cookies for this time of year! -

I've been longing for some good comfort food during these cooler days, like some home made shepherds pie or Irish Stew. It warms up the soul :) -
With the fall comes so many wonderful pumpkins, root vegetables and varieties of apples. It is time to roast and bake to bring those fabulous aromas into the house. I am craving roasting beets, baked butternut squash in the oven and apple crumble, apple cake and apple pies......can't wait to get started.....mmmmmm! -
Looking out the window and seeing all of these fall colors makes me want to have pumpkin pie! -
I want my wife to make her amazing pizza assortment that she does for a big crowd - Thai Chicken, Chicken Caesar, Cold BLT, Taco, Spinach Feta and to finish it off Cookie Pizza! Perfect! -
I've been craving sushi lately. There is a restaurant that added cream cheese in their sushi. Its very good. I want to have some of those right now. yummm -
I've really been wanting to make a good bread all by myself, and to be honest, I've been dying to make Smitten Kitchen's Black Bread [http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2009/04/black-bread]. It has a list of seventeen (!) ingredients, like chocolate, bran, molasses, shallots, fennel seeds, caraway, cider vinegar, espresso powder and more, all rolled up into an awesome bread. I think the next long weekend will find me making this, because as complex as it sounds, it has to taste deeelicious ;) -
I am craving all things fall harvest: squash and pumpkin, zucchini breads, apple pies... mmmm!
